Peoria Unit 86 of the United Media Guild represents editorial and outside circulation employees of the Journal Star. We negotiate wages, hours and working conditions for about 80 employees. We meet at 12:30 p.m. the third Wednesday of every month at Two25, 225 NE Adams St., Peoria.
Local 86 of the American Newspaper Guild was chartered on May 31, 1957. In the 1970s, we saw our union’s name switch to The Newspaper Guild, reflecting its international representation. In 1995, our international union merged with the formidable Communication Workers of America. In 2011, our Local approved a merger with the St. Louis Newspaper Guild, which gave birth to the United Media Guild.
We are now Peoria Unit 86 of the United Media Guild, Communication Workers of America, AFL-CIO. The new name reflects the diversity of the Guild, which also represents fellow members in radio and television to name a few. The Peoria name and number 86 was maintained to reflect our Local’s history.
We are the people who bring you Peoria area’s most in-depth news reporting every day.
We are Peoria’s watchdog.

Good luck Guild. I’m sure you have heard the lastest to happen at SJR. Hope it is better for the PJS. P.S. As an employee at the PJS myself, this is nothing but getting rid of employee costs while maintaining CEO’s/CFO’s/etc.
Congratulations on your growing grassroots campaign to save local professional and credible news. Your fight is our fight. The Labor Council of West-Central IL AFL-CIO & The West-Central IL Building and Construction Trades Council AFL-CIO stands with you.
